St. Michael's rowing club has existed in Dún Laoghaire Harbour since the 1920's. Today, the club boasts over 50 members from complete beginners to experienced rowers. During the summer months we are an active competitor in the regattas held by our sister clubs in the East Coast Rowing Council and hold our own regatta, usually in July. Our crews train most evenings during the week with up to six crews on the water per night.
We frequently participate in the biennial Celtic Challenge rowing race, from Arklow (Ireland) to Aberystwyth (Wales). This is the world's longest open sea (as opposed to ocean) rowing race and in 2011 two St. Michael's crews completed the challenge in our traditional, wooden, East Coast skiffs, the Michael and the Eileen. The crews completed the challenge in 19hrs 59mins 30secs and 20hrs 30mins 0secs respectfully.
Our crews also regularly compete in the annual All-Ireland coastal rowing competition held by the Irish Coastal Rowing Federation.
At the end of each season St. Michael's also hosts The Hobbler's Challenge - The Original Rowing Race. This race follows the original path of our predecessors, the hobbler's of Dublin Bay.
Our members are regularly spotted on the coal harbour slipway, in our boat house at the slipway or in a Dún Laoghaire local (hopefully celebrating a victorious regatta!).
